CONSTRUCTION RAMPING UP ON I-95 AT EXIT 133 (ROUTE 17) IN STAFFORD COUNTY
Expect lane closures and possible delays on Route 17 for the next several weeks as part of the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project
FREDERICKSBURG ˗˗ Construction for the Interstate 95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project is ramping up with work advancing at the Exit 133/Route 17 interchange in Stafford County.
Drivers should anticipate lane closures and possible delays on Route 17 northbound and southbound starting next week, Tuesday, Nov. 13as crews begin construction activities for the new I-95 overpasses of Route 17.
Route 17 northbound and southbound may be reduced to a single lane overnight for the next several weeks at the overpasses to provide space for crews and equipment. Delays may occur due to the reduction in travel lanes.
Double lane closures are allowable for the following times:
Route 17 Northbound
- Monday – Thursday, 9 p.m. to 8 a.m. and Friday – Sunday, 11 p.m. – 8 a.m.
Route 17 Southbound
- Monday – Thursday, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and Friday – Sunday, 11 p.m. – 9 a.m.
Drivers are asked to be alert and use caution as they navigate the work zone. Work zone signs and barrels will guide motorists through the work zone.
Periodic single lane closures may be needed at this location and will vary at times. Crews will monitor traffic conditions and will avoid peak travel times to minimize traffic impacts.
Work is underway to build three additional lanes of I-95 southbound in the existing median. The new general purpose lanes will begin just north of Route 17 and end just south of Route 3 in Spotsylvania County. The three new lanes will be for through traffic or drivers traveling to points south of Fredericksburg.
The existing three southbound lanes will be dedicated to local traffic traveling from Exit 133/Route 17 to Exit 130/Route 3. Signs will help drivers distinguish the difference between the local lanes and the through traffic lanes.
Construction will begin on a new bridge over the Rappahannock River later this month. The new bridge will be parallel to the existing southbound I-95 bridge and carry the new general purpose lanes. As part of the $132 million project, crews will be modifying several of the I-95 on- and off-ramps at Exit 133 and replace the I-95 overpasses of Route 17.
Workers began construction in August 2018 and expect to be complete by May 2022.
