Route 3 will be reduced to a single lane near Route 608 (Farnham Church Lane) through May 2018 to allow crews to install sections of new pipe beneath the road

FREDERICKSBURG ⸺ An emergency pipe improvement project will reduce Route 3 to a single lane in Richmond County for approximately four months.

The pipe is located just west of the intersection with Route 608 (Farnham Creek Road) over Laton Swamp, and is around 4 miles west of the Lancaster County line.

Construction will begin on Monday, Feb. 5, and will be underway through May 29, 2018.

Temporary traffic signals will be installed to control traffic in the work zone 24 hours a day. Signals will be installed in the work zone in February and will remain in place until the project is complete. Message boards will be posted to notify drivers that they are approaching a work zone and new traffic signals.

Until traffic signals are installed, drivers can expect to encounter one-way alternating traffic in the work zone. A single lane will be closed on Mondays-Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Once the temporary traffic signals are activated, the speed limit in the work zone will be reduced to 35 mph.

Vehicle width will be restricted in the work zone. Vehicles wider than 10 ft. will not be permitted to pass through the work zone. Oversize vehicles wider than 10 ft. should take the most convenient alternate routes. VDOT will post signs warning drivers of the width restriction at the intersection of Route 3 and Route 360 in Warsaw, at the intersection of Route 3 and Route 201 in Lively, and at several additional intersections approaching the work zone.

Project Background

Crews will improve drainage near Laton’s Swamp by re-setting sections of concrete drainage pipe underneath Route 3, necessitating a lane closure. The repair will also install new pipe headwalls and rip rap stone.

This week, crews will begin work by installing signs and mobilizing equipment.

The project contractor is Burleigh Construction.
