EXPECT OVERNIGHT DELAYS ON I-95 NEAR FREDERICKSBURG
Double lane closures scheduled this week on I-95 northbound and southbound and full northbound closure on Tuesday and Wednesday nights at Exit 118/Thornburg

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Drivers should anticipate major overnight delays on Interstate 95 this week, with multiple work zones requiring double lane closures in the Fredericksburg area starting tonight.

Overnight travelers on I-95 are encouraged to use Route 1 or Route 301 to avoid delays.

The following lane closures are scheduled, weather permitting, from 9 p.m. to 10 a.m. 

I-95 Northbound

  • Exit 118 (Mudd Tavern Road) FULL CLOSURE

o   Tuesday  Wednesday: Expect a single lane to be closed at 9:30 p.m. on I-95 northbound followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. Between midnight and 5 a.m., all northbound traffic will be stopped several times for approximately 30 minutes each time. Crews will lift concrete beams over the interstate as part of the I-95 Overpass Replacement and Mudd Tavern Road widening project. During the stoppages, traffic will be detoured to the exit ramp, directed across Mudd Tavern Road, and guided onto the entrance ramp to the interstate. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. the following morning. If weather cancels operations on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings, work will occur overnight at the same time and location on Thursday, June 7. 

  • Exit 130 (Route 3) City of Fredericksburg

o   Wednesday: A single lane will close at 9 p.m. on I-95 northbound and reopen by 4:30 a.m. The work is connected to the I-95 Safety Improvements Project at the Exit 130 interchange. 

o   Tuesday  Friday: Expect alternating single lane closures on I-95 northbound near the interchange to allow crews to take soil samples for the upcoming I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project. The mobile work zone will begin at 9 p.m. and will end by 4:30 a.m. Crews will be working in different areas near the interchange and along the interstate including the Truslow Road overpass and Exit 130/Route 3 in Fredericksburg. 

  • Potomac Creek Bridge at Mile Marker 137

o   Monday  Friday: A single lane will close at 9 p.m. on I-95 northbound followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. at the Potomac Creek bridge for a bridge rehabilitation project. All lanes will reopen by 4:30 a.m. Thursday.  The bridge is located at mile marker 137, just before Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway). 

  • Exit 140 (Courthouse Road)

o   Wednesday  Friday: Expect alternating single lane closures to begin at 9 p.m. for a mobile work zone as part of the Exit 140 interchange relocation and Courthouse Road widening project.  All lanes will reopen by 4:30 a.m. 

I-95 Southbound

  • Aquia Creek Bridge at Mile Marker 145

o   Monday  Friday: A single lane will close at 9 p.m. on I-95 southbound followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. at the Aquia Creek bridge for a bridge rehabilitation project. Double lane closures will end at 4:30 a.m. Thursday.  A single lane will remain closed until 7 a.m. on southbound. The bridge is located at mile marker 145, just north of Exit 143 (Route 610/Garrisonville).  

 Exit 140 (Courthouse Road)

o   Monday  Thursday: Expect alternating single lane closures to begin at 9 p.m. for a mobile work zone.  All lanes will reopen by 7 a.m. 

  • Potomac Creek Bridge at Mile Marker 137

o   Monday  Friday: A single lane will close at 9 p.m. on I-95 southbound followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. at the Potomac Creek bridge. Double lane closures will end at 4:30 a.m. A single lane will remain closed until 10 a.m. on I-95 southbound the following morning.

o   Monday  Friday: Expect alternating single lane closures on I-95 southbound near the interchange to allow crews to take soil samples for the upcoming I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project. The mobile work zone will begin at 9 p.m. All lanes will reopen by 10 a.m. the following morning.

Overhead message boards will warn drivers to stay alert for the work zones ahead and delays.
