FULL I-95 TRAFFIC STOPS PLANNED NEXT WEEK AT THORNBURG IN SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY
Expect overnight delays on I-95 northbound and southbound south of Fredericksburg for bridge work on Wednesday, June 27 and Thursday, June 28

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Construction to build a new Mudd Tavern Road overpass of Interstate 95 and improve the Exit 118/Thornburg interchange is advancing in Spotsylvania County, and overnight full traffic stops are scheduled on two evenings next week to continue work on the new bridge.

Bridge forms and deck overhangs will be installed next week, which will allow crews to pour the new concrete deck for the overpass.

To protect the safety of travelers, full traffic stops are required while crews place the forms and overhangs. Northbound I-95 traffic will be stopped overnight on Wednesday, June 27, and southbound I-95 traffic will be stopped on Thursday, June 28.

I-95 travelers are encouraged to use Route 1 or Route 301 to avoid delays overnight.

During the traffic stops, interstate traffic will be detoured to the Exit 118 off-ramp, directed across Mudd Tavern Road and guided back to the interstate.

Message boards on I-95 and Route 1 will provide advance notice of lane closures and detour routes. Traffic signals along these routes are timed to accommodate increased traffic volumes.

Weather permitting, lane closures have been scheduled at the following dates and times:

Wednesday, June 27

I-95 Northbound

  • Double lane closure begins at 9:30 p.m.
  • Between midnight and 5 a.m., all I-95 northbound traffic will be detoured to take the Exit 118/Thornburg off-ramp, directed across Mudd Tavern Road and back to the on-ramp.
  • All lanes re-open to traffic by 5 a.m.
  • All lanes of I-95 southbound remain open on this evening.

Thursday, June 28

I-95 Southbound

  • Double lane closure begins at 9:30 p.m.
  • Between midnight and 5 a.m., all I-95 southbound traffic will be detoured to take the Exit 118/Thornburg off-ramp, directed across Mudd Tavern Road and back to the on-ramp.
  • All lanes re-open to traffic by 5 a.m.
  • All lanes of I-95 northbound remain open on this evening.

If work is postponed on the evenings of Wednesday, June 27 or Thursday, June 28 due to inclement weather, the work zone and traffic stops will be rescheduled to occur overnight on Sunday, July 1 and Monday, July 2.

Local drivers should anticipate alternating, one-way traffic and flagging operations on Mudd Tavern Road during both nights. Local traffic will be able to access I-95. To avoid delays, drivers may use Exit 110/Ladysmith or Exit 126/Massaponax to enter or exit I-95 during the overnight hours.

Virginia State Police will be assisting with traffic control in the work zone.

Exit 118 Interchange Improvements and New I-95 Overpass

Construction is underway on a $22.4 million project to build a new four-lane overpass on Mudd Tavern Road bridging I-95. Interchange improvements are also underway at Exit 118 that will improve the alignment of interchange ramps with Mudd Tavern Road, and the alignment of nearby Mallard Road.

Construction began in October 2017 and will be completed in September 2019.
