Double lane closures are also scheduled overnight on I-95 northbound and southbound this week starting tonight, Oct. 1

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Drivers should anticipate overnight lane closures and delays on Interstate 95 northbound and southbound in the Fredericksburg area this week, including full traffic stops scheduled for tonight, Oct. 1.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is encouraging overnight travelers to use Route 1 or Route 301 to avoid delays.

I-95 northbound traffic at Exit 130 (Route 3) will be stopped for one 30-minute period after midnight Tuesday, Oct. 2 for utility work as part of the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project.

Intermittent full traffic stops at Exit 130 (Route 3) on I-95 southbound are also set for tonight to allow crews to install a new overhead sign as part of the safety improvement project at the interchange. I-95 southbound traffic will be stopped up to 30 minutes at a time between midnight and 4:30 a.m. Tuesday for motorist safety.

Weather permitting, the following lane closures are scheduled from 9 p.m. to 10 a.m.

I-95 Northbound

  • Exit 118 (Route 606/Mudd Tavern Road) On- and Off-Ramps in Spotsylvania County

o   Tuesday  Friday:  Expect flagging operations and intermittent stops at the I-95 northbound on- and off-ramps from Mudd Tavern Road during the day to allow crews to mill and pave for the new traffic alignment and bridge as part of the Exit 118 overpass replacement and road improvement project. 

  • Mile Marker 121 at Ni River Bridge in Spotsylvania County

o   Friday: A single lane will close at 9 a.m. at the bridge over the Ni River for bridge inspection and will reopen by noon. The bridge is located at mile marker 121, north of Exit 118/Thornburg.

  • Exit 130 (Route 3/Plank Road) in Fredericksburg FULL TRAFFIC STOP

o   Monday  Tuesday: Virginia State Police will slowly roll traffic on I-95 northbound to a stop just after midnight near the Cowan Boulevard overpass, located near the Exit 130 interchange for utility work. Traffic will be stopped up to 30 minutes for motorist safety. The work is connected to the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project.

o   Tuesday: A single lane on I-95 northbound will close at 9:30 a.m. and reopen by 3:30 p.m. for paving work.

  • Mile Marker 132 (Rappahannock River Bridge)

o   Tuesday  Friday: A single right lane will close at 9:30 a.m. at the bridge over the Rappahannock River for a routine bridge inspection. The lane will reopen by 3:30 p.m. each day.

  • Mile Marker 145 at Aquia Creek Bridge in Stafford County

o   Monday  Thursday: A single lane will close at 9 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. for a bridge rehabilitation project.  All lanes will reopen by 4:30 a.m.  The bridge is located at mile marker 145, north of Exit 143 (Route 610/Garrisonville). 

I-95 Southbound

  • Mile Marker 145 at Aquia Creek Bridge in Stafford County

o   Monday  Thursday: A single lane will close at 9 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. Double lane closures will end at 4:30 a.m.  A single lane will remain closed until 10 a.m.  

  • Exit 130 (Route 3) City of Fredericksburg FULL TRAFFIC STOPS

o   Monday  Tuesday: A double lane closure on I-95 southbound will begin at 10 p.m. All of I-95 southbound traffic will be intermittently stopped overnight between midnight and 4:30 a.m. for up to 30 minutes at a time for motorist safety. Crews will be installing an overhead sign just north of Exit 130. All ramps will remain open. All southbound lanes will reopen by 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. Virginia State Police will assist with traffic control. The work is connected to the I-95 Safety Improvements Project at the Exit 130 interchange.

o   Monday  Thursday: A single lane on the I-95 southbound off-ramp to westbound Route 3 will be closed starting at 9 p.m. and will reopen at 6 a.m.

I-95 Northbound and Southbound

  • Mile Marker 129 in City of Fredericksburg to Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) Stafford County

o   Tuesday Friday: Expect a single lane closure between mile marker 129 which is near Exit 130 (Route 3) and Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) to allow crews to install temporary concrete barriers along the left shoulder of I-95 northbound and southbound. All lanes will reopen by 4:30 a.m.on I-95 northbound and 10 a.m. on I-95 southbound. 

Overhead message boards will warn drivers to stay alert for the work zones ahead and delays.
