REROUTE YOUR OVERNIGHT COMMUTE WITH WORK ZONES AND FULL TRAFFIC STOPS ON I-95 IN FREDERICKSBURG
Expect double lane closures overnight on I-95 northbound and southbound each evening with full traffic stops at Exit 130 on Thursday, Sept. 27

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is encouraging overnight travelers to use Route 1 or Route 301 to avoid delays on Interstate 95 in the Fredericksburg area this week with overnight work zones requiring double lane closures starting tomorrow night, Sept. 25.

Intermittent full traffic stops on I-95 southbound originally scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 20 at Exit 130/Route 3 were postponed to this week. Full traffic stops are set for Thursday, Sept. 27 to allow crews to install a new overhead sign as part of the safety improvement project at the interchange. I-95 southbound traffic will be stopped up to 30 minutes at a time for motorist safety.

Weather permitting, the following lane closures are scheduled from 9 p.m. to 10 a.m.:

I-95 Southbound

  • Mile Marker 145 at Aquia Creek Bridge in Stafford County

o   Tuesday  Thursday: A single lane will close at 9 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. for a bridge rehabilitation project. Double lane closures will end at 4:30 a.m.  A single lane will remain closed until 10 a.m. The bridge is located at mile marker 145, north of Exit 143 (Route 610/Garrisonville). 

  • Mile Marker 137 at Potomac Creek Bridge in Stafford County

o   Tuesday  Friday: A single lane will close at 9 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. Double lane closures will end at 4:30 a.m.for a bridge rehabilitation project. A single lane will remain closed until 10 a.m. The bridge is located at mile marker 137, just before Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway).

  • Exit 130 (Route 3) City of Fredericksburg FULL TRAFFIC STOPS

o   Tuesday  Thursday: A single lane on the I-95 southbound off-ramp to westbound Route 3 will be closed starting at 9 p.m. and will reopen at 6 a.m. The work is connected to the I-95 Safety Improvements Project at the Exit 130 interchange.

o   Thursday  Friday: A double lane closure on I-95 southbound will begin at 10 p.m. All of I-95 southbound traffic will be intermittently stopped overnight between midnight and 4:30 a.m. for up to 30 minutes at a time for motorist safety. Crews will be installing an overhead sign just north of Exit 130. All ramps will remain open. All northbound lanes will remain open. All southbound lanes will reopen by 4:30 a.m. Friday. Virginia State Police will assist with traffic control. 

o   Wednesday: A single lane will close at 9 a.m. at the bridge over Route 1 for bridge inspection and will reopen by 3:30 p.m.

I-95 Northbound

  • Exit 118 (Route 606/Mudd Tavern Road) On- and Off-Ramps in Spotsylvania County

o   Tuesday  Friday:  Expect flagging operations and intermittent stops at the I-95 northbound on- and off-ramps from Mudd Tavern Road during the day to allow crews to mill and pave for the new traffic alignment and bridge as part of the Exit 118 overpass replacement and road improvement project. 

  • Mile Marker 121 at Ni River Bridge in Spotsylvania County

o   Tuesday: A single lane will close at 9 a.m. at the bridge over the Ni River for bridge inspection and will reopen by 3:30 p.m. The bridge is located at mile marker 121, north of Exit 118/Thornburg.

  • Mile Marker 137 at Potomac Creek Bridge in Stafford County

o   Tuesday  Friday: A single lane will close at 9 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m.  All lanes will reopen by 4:30 a.m.

o   Tuesday  Friday: A single lane will close at 9 p.m. near Exit 140 (Courthouse Road) and passed Exit 143/Garrisonville at mile marker 144 to mile marker 147 followed by double lane closures at 10 p.m. Crews will be installing pavement markers after recently paving this section of the interstate. All lanes will reopen by 4:30 a.m.

  • Mile Marker 145 at Aquia Creek Bridge in Stafford County

o   Wednesday  Thursday: A single lane will close at 9 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m.  All lanes will reopen by 4:30 a.m.

o   Tuesday  Thursday: A single lane will close at 9:30 a.m. and reopen at 3:30 p.m.

I-95 Northbound and Southbound

  • Mile Marker 129 in City of Fredericksburg to Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) Stafford County

o   Tuesday Friday: Expect a single lane closure between mile marker 129 which is near Exit 130 (Route 3) and Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) to allow crews to install temporary concrete barriers along the left shoulder of I-95 northbound and southbound. All lanes will reopen by 4:30 a.m. on I-95 northbound and 10 a.m. on I-95 southbound.  The work is connected to construction starting for the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project. 

Overhead message boards will warn drivers to stay alert for the work zones ahead and delays.
