ROUTE 620 (KISSINGER SPRINGS ROAD) TO CLOSE AT BRIDGE IN NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY
Bridge over Kissinger Mill Pond is closed to all traffic for motorist safety
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – A bridge on Route 620 (Kissinger Springs Road) over Kissinger Mill Pond in Northumberland County has closed to all traffic after a recent bridge safety inspection found deterioration in key support elements.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) determined the bridge should be closed immediately for motorist safety. The bridge was posted with a 10 ton vehicle weight restriction.
The single-lane bridge was built in 1990. It is a timber deck structure on steel beams.
There is a planned project to replace the bridge’s beams and deck by state forces. Construction is scheduled to begin no later than April 2019, but the department will seek to accelerate the project schedule.
Temporary signs will be posted to guide drivers along the recommended detour route, which is approximately 5 miles:
- Route 622 (Harry Hogan Road)
- Route 712 (Harry Hogan Road)
- Route 202 (Hampton Hall Road)
- Route 621 (Mundy Point Road)
Permanent detour signs are being fabricated and will be posted in several weeks.
Approximately 129 vehicles a day cross the bridge on Kissinger Springs Road, according to a VDOT traffic count.
Motorists can find real-time information on lane closures, work zones, traffic and other incidents on 511Virginia.
