USE ALTERNATE ROUTES OVERNIGHT TO AVOID DELAYS ON I-95 NEAR FREDERICKSBURG
Multiple work zones with double lane closures on I-95 northbound and southbound this week; full southbound closure beginning at midnight at Exit 118/Thornburg

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Drivers should anticipate major overnight delays and lane closures on Interstate 95 this week, with multiple work zones scheduled in the Fredericksburg area starting tonight.

I-95 travelers are encouraged to use Route 1 or Route 301 to avoid delays.

The following lane closures are scheduled, weather permitting, from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.:

I-95 Southbound

  • Exit 118 (Mudd Tavern Road) FULL CLOSURE

o   Tonight: Expect a single lane to be closed at 9:30 p.m. on I-95 southbound followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m.  Between midnight and 5 a.m. all southbound traffic will be stopped several times for approximately 30 minutes each time. Crews will lift concrete beams over the interstate as part of the I-95 Overpass Replacement and Mudd Tavern Road widening project. During the stoppages, traffic will be detoured to the exit ramp, directed across Mudd Tavern Road, and guided onto the entrance ramp to the interstate. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Wednesday. 

o   Wednesday  Thursday: Expect a single lane to close on I-95 southbound near Exit 126/Massaponax at 9 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. All lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. Crews continue repairs to the I-95 bridge over Route 1. 

  • Potomac Creek Bridge at Mile Marker 137

o   Tuesday  Friday: A single lane will close at 9 p.m. on I-95 southbound followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. at the Potomac Creek bridge for a bridge rehabilitation project. Double lane closures will end at 4:30 a.m. the following morning.  A single lane will remain closed until 7 a.m. on I-95 southbound except on Friday when the single lane will reopen at 6 a.m. The bridge is located at mile marker 137, just before Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway).

  • Aquia Creek Bridge at Mile Marker 145

o   Tuesday  Friday: A single lane will close at 9 p.m. on I-95 southbound followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. at the Aquia Creek bridge for a bridge rehabilitation project. Double lane closures will end at 4:30 a.m. the following morning.  A single lane will remain closed until 7 a.m. on southbound. The bridge is located at mile marker 145, just before Exit 143 (Route 610/Garrisonville).   

I-95 Northbound

  • Exit 118 (Mudd Tavern Road)

o   Tonight: Expect a single lane to be closed at 9:30 p.m. on I-95 northbound followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m.  All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. 

o   Wednesday  Thursday: Expect a single lane to be closed at 9:30 p.m. on I-95 northbound followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. Between midnight and 5 a.m. all northbound traffic will be stopped several times for approximately 30 minutes each time to lift concrete beams over the interstate. During the stoppages, traffic will be detoured to the exit ramp, directed across Mudd Tavern Road, and guided onto the entrance ramp to the interstate. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Thursday. 

  • Rappahannock River Bridge at Mile Marker 132

o   Tuesday  Wednesday: A single lane will close at 9 p.m. on I-95 northbound at the bridge over the Rappahannock River for repairs. All lanes will reopen by 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. The bridge is located at mile marker 132, which is just before Exit 133/Falmouth. 

  • Potomac Creek Bridge at Mile Marker 137

o   Tuesday  Friday: A single lane will close at 9 p.m. on I-95 northbound followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. at the Potomac Creek bridge. All lanes will reopen by 4:30 a.m. the following morning.  

Overhead message boards will warn drivers to stay alert for the work zones ahead and delays.
