SECURITY CHANGES FOR THE JAMESTOWN-SCOTLAND FERRY THIS WEEK
Possible suspension of service and increase the number of boats during celebration
SURRY — Normal service on the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry will be temporarily disrupted between May 11 and 13 due to increased security precautions during the Jamestown 2007 Anniversary.
Pedestrians and bicyclists will be prohibited on the ferry during the anniversary celebration. A free park-and-ride shuttle service operated by the Jamestown 2007 organizers will transport visitors from the Surry County Recreation Center to the event site.
Thru-traffic not headed to the celebration will be directed through the settlement on Route 31 as Virginia State Police will block all other access points.
In anticipation of additional traffic, the Virginia Department of Transportation will run three boats from 1-10 p.m. Friday, May 11, and from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 12, and Sunday, May 13.
Additionally, there will be increased security screening, and ferry service may be suspended, without notice, for over an hour due to security precautions.
Motorists should have a plan for an alternate route or be prepared to wait for service to resume.
For more information on the shuttle or park and ride lot locations, please go to the Jamestown 2007 Web site.
For more information about the ferry schedule visit VirginiaDOT.org or call (800)VA-FERRY [(800) 823-3779].
