VDOT TEMPORARILY CLOSING MIDTOWN TUNNEL FIRST WEEKEND IN JUNE
Agency conducting major asphalt repairs and other maintenance
NORFOLK — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close the Midtown Tunnel the first weekend in June to replace asphalt in and around the tunnel.
The closure will begin at 11:30 p.m. the night of Friday, June 1, and remain closed until 5 a.m. Monday, June 4.
Motorists are urged to use the Downtown Tunnel as an alternate route during this weekend. Detour signs will be posted.
VDOT has scheduled this work over an entire weekend in order to accomplish as much as possible in the shortest amount of time, and to eliminate the need for additional closures during the week for maintenance.
In addition to replacing asphalt, VDOT will also replace lenses and fixtures, re-lamp the tunnel, inspect and clean electrical components, clean drains and test the tide gates.
For more information about this closure or other VDOT maintenance, motorists can tune into 610AM, dial 511 or visit VirginiaDOT.org.
Motorists are also encouraged to call VDOT's TrafficLine at (757) 361-3016 for the Highway Advisory Radio transmission from 610AM and to access bridge and tunnel information.
