VDOT TEMPORARILY CLOSING WEST BOUND DOWNTOWN TUNNEL TWO CONSECUTIVE WEEKENDS IN FEBRUARY Agency performing facility maintenance
NORFOLK— The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close the westbound tube of the Downtown Tunnel the first two weekends in February to replace damaged and worn tiles.
The first closure will begin at midnight the morning of Saturday, February 3 and remain closed until 5 a.m. Monday, February 5. The following weekend, the tunnel will be closed from midnight Saturday morning, February 10 through 5 a.m. Monday, February 12.
Motorists are urged to use the Midtown Tunnel or take 464 to 64 as alternate routes during both weekends. Detour signs will be posted.
VDOT has scheduled this work over an entire weekend in order to accomplish as much as possible in the shortest amount of time, and to eliminate the need for multiple closures during the work week. In addition to replacing tiles, VDOT will also be repairing drains, replacing light fixtures and repairing lights.
“Although these repairs are sometimes inconvenient, this preventive maintenance is vital to ensure all tunnel systems are maintained in order to function properly.” says Elizabeth River Tunnels Facility Manager Tyrone Brown.
For more information about this closure or other VDOT maintenance, motorists can tune into 610AM, dial 511 or visit www.VDOT.Virginia.gov. Motorists are also encouraged to call VDOT's new Hampton Roads TrafficLine at 757-361-3016 for the Highway Advisory Radio transmission from 610AM and to access bridge and tunnel information.
