Signals will flash in amber mode during phase in
PORTSMOUTH — Beginning Thursday, May 3, motorists entering the Midtown Tunnel from Portsmouth will see amber flashing signals before the traffic lights become fully activated on Tuesday, May 8th.
The signals are used to warn motorists and stop traffic during disruptions in the tunnel. They are placed in a flashing mode for several days prior to fully activation to alert travelers of the new signals.
In addition to the traffic signals, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will also be testing the overhead variable message signs that provide travel information to motorists headed toward the tunnel.
For more traveler’s information, motorists can tune into 610 AM, dial 511 or visit VirginiaDOT.org.
Motorists are also encouraged to call VDOT's TrafficLine at (757) 361-3016 for the Highway Advisory Radio transmission from 610 AM and to access bridge and tunnel information.
