VDOT ROAD CONDITIONS UPDATE 1:30 AM
Motorists urged not to travel unless absolutely necessary
HAMPTON ROADS – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews continue to plow and treat interstate and primary roads overnight. VDOT recommends that drivers do not travel overnight unless it is absolutely necessary.
As with any winter weather event, snow plow drivers have focused their initial efforts on interstates and high traffic state maintained primary routes. Crews have been plowing and treating roads throughout Saturday and into Sunday, but with the low temperatures and continued light snow fall there are many areas that remain snow covered and slick.
All VDOT maintained bridges in Hampton Roads are passable. Area bridges have been treated with abrasives, and will continue to be treated throughout Sunday. Even with treatment, bridges leading to and exiting area tunnels will continue to experienece slick conditions overnight. Motorists should use extreme caution if bridge travel is necessary by keeping safe distances and driving at moderate speeds.
Currently, moderate conditions exist on the Southside and Peninsula interstate roadways, as well as on VDOT maintained primary roadways. Ramps and overpasses throughout the area are slick and require cautious driving.
Current Road Closures:
I-64 East/West High Occupancy Vehicle Reversible Roadway is closed
At this time, the vast majority of area state maintained secondary roads, neighborhood streets and subdivision routes have not been plowed. When roads improve to minor or clear conditions on area interstates and primary routes, resources will begin to focus on plowing and treating state maintained subdivision streets and rural secondary routes. VDOT crews will continue working around the clock until all roads are cleared.
