PILE DRIVING FOR ELIZABETH RIVER TUNNELS PROJECT UNDERWAY IN NORFOLK
PORTSMOUTH – The sounds of progress continue throughout the Elizabeth River Tunnels Project this week as crews drive sheet piles to support construction of the Norfolk Approach to the new Midtown Tunnel.
Crews are driving more than 500 pairs of sheets up to 70 feet deep near the Midtown Tunnel portal in Norfolk. Nearby residents and businesses may see and/or hear the operations, which are not expected to exceed the City of Norfolk’s noise ordinance. Work hours are Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. now, through winter 2013.
Fall 2013, crews will begin driving precast concrete piles that range from 18” to 24” square, up to 85 feet in length. They will serve as a vital foundation component of the new approach.
