Public Comments Sought on Proposed Capacity Improvements to Section of I-64 in Newport News
Public is invited to review and submit comments by Wednesday, July 15

HAMPTON ROADS — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are seeking public comments on proposed improvements to increase traffic capacity to a section of Interstate 64 in the city of Newport News. The proposal includes the addition of one 12-foot wide travel lane and one 12-foot wide shoulder lane in each direction on I-64 from west of Exit 255 (Jefferson Avenue/Route 143) to just east of Exit 247 (Yorktown Road/Route 238).

On April 21, 2014, FHWA issued a Record of Decision (ROD) for the first operationally independent section to be advanced from the Final Environment Impact Statement (FEIS). Since the issuance of the ROD, VDOT has advanced planning and design of the first section. This advanced work has identified the funding for improved shoulders within the section. These improved shoulders could accommodate additional capacity during peak hours and other select times, in addition to supporting emergency access along the interstate. Given this new information, VDOT plans to submit a Request for an Amended Record of Decision (Request) to document the planned change in implementing an interim build condition of the first section. VDOT is making the amended request available for a 15-day public comment period.

Comments on the draft amended request should be submitted by July 15, 2015 to the VDOT Hampton Roads Office of Communications, 1700 N. Main Street, Suffolk, VA 23434. Comments may also be submitted via email to or by telephone at 757-925-2583.
