ICY CONDITIONS INCREASING, AVOID TRAVEL
Motorists should expect ice, snow and coastal flooding to impact travel
SUFFOLK- Temperatures are dropping causing ice to form on roadways both on the Southside and Peninsula. VDOT crews are applying salt and abrasives in both regions, but motorists are encouraged to avoid travel. VDOT crews and personnel are working 12 hour shifts to clear area interstates and roadways and to address other storm-related issues, including high winds and coastal flooding expected to increase this afternoon and last into the evening hours. Some snow accumulations are also expected in the Hampton Roads District throughout the day Saturday.
Primary routes are currently in minor to moderate condition, while secondary routes are reported as moderate to severe. Coastal flooding has caused travel issues on parts of Virginia’s Eastern Shore. High winds associated with the storm could also produce downed power lines and tree limbs so be cautious in your travels and report any problems to the VDOT Customer Service Center at 1-800-For-Road (1-800-367-7623).
If you have to be on the highways while VDOT crews are working, please use extreme caution while driving and do not crowd our plows. Give crews plenty of space to work and allow plenty of braking distance due to slick and snow-covered pavement.
VDOT’s goal is to have all state-maintained roads passable within 48 hours after a storm ends, if there are no additional accumulations.
