VIRGINIA CAPITAL TRAIL RESURFACING IMPROVEMENT PROJECT TO BEGIN
Construction and closures are scheduled to begin the week of July 24, 2017
JAMES CITY COUNTY – A project to restore and improve the pavement conditions on the pedestrian and bicycle shared-use path of the Virginia Capital Trail is scheduled to begin construction the week of July 24, 2017. The maintenance and resurfacing of this path will ensure that the Trail remains safe, usable and accessible to visitors for years to come.
Blakemore Construction Corporation was awarded the $373,000 construction contract to resurface 3.3 miles of multi-use path starting on the east side of the entrance road to the Chickahominy Riverfront Park and ending at the wooden bridge parallel to John Tyler Highway (Route 5) east of Governor’s Landing Road.
The closures will take place in two phases, with only one portion of the Trail closed at a time. Starting the week of July 24, the first portion of the multi-use path, from the Shellbank Creek wooden bridge (mile marker 3, east of Governor’s Landing Road) to Brick Bat Road, will be closed to pedestrians and cyclists for paving operations. Once this phase is complete, the first portion will reopen and the second phase, from Brick Bat Road to the entrance of Chickahominy Riverfront Park, will close for the remaining duration of construction.
Visitors to the Virginia Capital Trail should use caution while safely sharing the road with motorists on Route 5 during weekly construction, which is scheduled for completion September 8, 2017.
The Virginia Capital Trail is a 54-mile bicycle and pedestrian trail that connects Virginia’s past and present state capitals of Jamestown, Williamsburg and Richmond along Scenic Route 5.
