ROUTE 709 WIDENING COMPLETED 30 DAYS EARLY
Project increases safety for motorists and bicyclists on Eastern Shore

ACCOMACK COUNTY – A newly widened Route 709 near New Church opened to the public on Friday, May 5, marking the early completion of a VDOT project to improve safety and increase capacity along 4 miles of rural road. All detours associated with the project have been lifted.

Construction began in fall 2015 and was completed 30 days ahead of schedule. The project widened Route 709’s two travel lanes between Route 13 (Lankford Highway) and Route 679 (Fleming Road) to 11 feet from 8 feet and turned its variable shoulders into 6-foot-wide graded shoulders. Additionally, 2 feet of shoulder was paved for bicyclists.

Construction also fixed horizontal and vertical deficiencies along the route, further improving safety.

The $6.3 million project was constructed under a contract awarded in July 2015 to Branch Civil Inc., formerly E.V. Williams Inc.
