Gerry L. Harter, PE, PTOE, has joined the staff of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) as the  Lynchburg Area Traffic Engineer in the Southwest Operations Region of the Department.

In his new position, Harter will oversee daily traffic engineering activities supporting the Lynchburg District, including data collection, traffic engineering studies, preliminary engineering, work zone safety and the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). 

Prior to joining VDOT, Harter was the City Traffic Engineer for Lynchburg and worked closely with VDOT on many projects and programs. 

A graduate of the University of South Florida where he earned both a Bachelor of Science and a  Master of Science in Civil Engineering degree, Harter was previously an engineering consultant in Florida. 

He is a Registered Professional Engineer and Registered Professional Traffic Operations Engineer, a member of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) and American Public Works Association (APWA) and has produced a number of publications and presentations in the traffic engineering area. 

Harter lives in Concord, VA with his wife and three children and is active in his church and community.
