TRANSPORTATION BOARD APPROVES LOCATION FOR WOODLAWN ROAD REPLACEMENT THROUGH FORT BELVOIR

The Commonwealth Transportation Board today approved an alignment for a new four-lane divided roadway through Fort Belvoir that will restore access between Route 1 and Telegraph Road for thousands of motorists.

The two-mile connector will replace Woodlawn Road and part of Beulah Road which the Army closed following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Old Mill Road will be widened for 0.3 miles from Route 1 to Pole Road and extended on a new alignment for 1.7 miles from Pole Road to Telegraph Road.

A 10-foot pedestrian/bicycle path will be built with the project. Construction is expected to begin in late 2008 and take two years to complete.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will be responsible for acquiring right of way and the Federal Highway Administration will administer the construction contract.

The project will be funded with federal dollars. About $38 million of the $49 million project is funded.

County, state and federal parties are working together to identify the remaining $11 million.
