Traffic Signals in Northern Virginia ready For Shoppers
CHANTILLY, VA. Shoppers venturing out this Friday will experience shorter wait times and a smoother flow of traffic around a dozen shopping centers throughout Northern Virginia as the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) prepares to implement its annual holiday traffic signal timing plan.
Using traffic data gathered during last year’s holiday season, VDOT developed several time and location-specific signal timing plans at 178 signals, designed to give motorists enough time to enter and exit the shopping centers without waiting in long queues, while coordinating traffic with the surrounding roads.
The special timing plans will be in effect at the following shopping centers from Nov. 28 to Jan. 1:
• Tysons and Galleria Shopping Centers
• Reston Town Center
• Fair Lakes Shopping Center
• Fair Oaks Mall
• Potomac Mills Mall
• Manassas Mall
• Shopping centers on Route 234
• Springfield Mall
• Cascades Town Center
• Potomac Run Center
• Dulles Town Center
“The signal timing plans for 178 intersections around 12 major shopping centers were customized to accommodate the changing traffic patterns expected with the influx of holiday shoppers,” said Ling Li, Regional Traffic Operations Manager of VDOT’s Traffic Management Center.
VDOT has assisted area shopping centers by retiming signals during the holidays since 1999.
