VDOT Closes Bridge in Great Falls for Emergency Repairs

The bridge carrying Springvale Road over Piney Run in Great Falls is closed for several weeks while emergency repairs are made to bridge supports, the Virginia Department of Transportation announced today.

The bridge is located on Springvale Road, north of Leesburg Pike (Route 7) near the community of Springvale Woods. Motorists bound for Springvale Road, north of the bridge, will be detoured around the bridge on the following route, which will add about 10 minutes to the normal travel time:
Detour: Route 7 west, right on Utterback Store Road, right on Georgetown Pike (Route 193) back to Springvale Drive. The route will be clearly marked by VDOT variable message signs and direction signs. Motorists heading south from Georgetown Pike (Route 193) to Leesburg Pike (Route 7) will travel the detour in reverse.

Although the bridge over Piney Run was inspected in June and found to be in fair condition, the support for the abutments under the bridge were damaged as a result of Tropical Storm Hanna. VDOT engineers estimate that it could take up to four weeks to complete the repairs.
