VDOT CREWS PREPARING FOR RUSH HOUR

The Virginia Department of Transportation is preparing for freezing temperatures and precipitation during rush hour this evening with 780 salt trucks treating Northern Virginia roads.

VDOT will have 172 trucks on the interstates, 317 trucks in Fairfax County, 101 trucks in Loudoun County, and 190 trucks in Prince William County. These figures include fifteen salt trucks and four liquid magnesium tankers at the Springfield Interchange, which are now dedicated to that area for all winter storms.

Crews have treated area commuter lots, and will continue to treat interstate ramps and bridges with salt in preparation for rush hour. Crews are also sanding hills, curves and trouble spots in subdivisions where necessary.

With temperatures expected to remain at or below freezing overnight, VDOT asks that motorists use extreme caution on all roads, as freezing precipitation may cause slick spots.

VDOT urges motorists to observe the following winter driving tips:

    • Make sure your vehicle is winter ready.
    • Keep an emergency driving kit in your car and wear your seatbelt.
    • Keep a safe distance of at least five seconds behind other vehicles.
    • Be aware of potentially icy areas such as shady spots and bridges.
    • When driving on ice, don’t slam on your brakes. Travel gently. Turn slowly.
    • Sudden changes can cause your car to spin out of control.
    • Know the conditions! Before heading out, call 511 for the latest road condition information or visit
    • www.VirginiaDOT.org.
