NIGHTTIME TRAFFIC SHIFT SCHEDULED FOR LORTON
Steel beams will be lifted Jan. 12-15

LORTON, Va. - The Virginia Department of Transportation has scheduled a nighttime lane shift on Lorton Road from Monday, Jan. 12 to Thursday, Jan. 15 as part of the Interstate 95 widening. Closures are also scheduled on I-95 near Lorton Road (Exit 163) on these nights while steel beams are lifted over Lorton Road to build a fourth lane on I-95.

From 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. January 12-15, state and county police will direct traffic at Silverbrook Road, Gunston Cove Road and the I-95 ramps to and from Lorton Road as it is reduced to one lane in each direction. Ramps will remain open during all night work.

No significant delays are expected from the work, although project officials expect one complete 10- to 15-minute stoppage on Lorton Road each night when the steel beams go up.

Between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Jan. 12-15, traffic on Lorton Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction. (See chart below for details). The lanes will be shifted to either the eastbound or the westbound lanes on Lorton Road, depending on which steel girders are being raised. The contractor has reserved the night of Jan. 21 as an additional work night in case of weather or construction related delays.

Crews need two nights to raise the beams for the northbound I-95 bridge and two nights to raise the beams for the southbound bridge. There will be right lane closures on I-95 north and south all four nights.
The reduced lanes on Lorton Road will be separated by construction barrels during these nighttime lane shifts and police will be on site.

The steel beams will rest on abutments that crews have been building since March. The abutments and beams will support bridges to accommodate one new lane in each direction of the I-95 general purpose lanes.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
VDOT is adding a fourth lane in each direction on I-95 between Gordon Boulevard (Route 123) at the Occoquan River and the Fairfax County Parkway (Route 7100). The additional lane will help ease the bottleneck in this section of interstate and is expected to be completed in late fall 2011.
The first major milestone, the additional northbound lane from Route 1 to the existing fourth lane at Newington, is scheduled to open by the end of 2009.
