WOODBRIDGE — At 4 p.m. today the Virginia Department of Transportation closed a structurally deficient bridge on Blackburn Road in Woodbridge. The road is closed between Rippon Boulevard and Wentworth Lane.

During a routine visual inspection earlier today, crews noticed severe vertical cracks on both abutments, causing the failure of a portion of one abutment. The bridge will remain closed until repairs are completed.  Crews will post detour signs tomorrow alerting motorists to use Route 1. The bridge carries about 6,000 vehicles a day.

VDOT will update the community with a timeline for completing repairs as soon as possible.
