Meet the project team May 8 at Haymarket Town Hall

HAYMARKET—The Virginia Department of Transportation invites drivers and residents to meet the I-66 widening project team and learn more about the construction schedule at a “pardon our dust” meeting, 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 8, 2014 at the Haymarket Town Hall, 15000 Washington Street.

Work is under way to add one HOV and one regular lane in each direction from Rt. 15 in Gainesville to Rt. 29 in Haymarket, to improve traffic flow to and from Haymarket, western Prince William and eastern Fauquier counties. When the $73.5 million project is complete in Aug. 2016, drivers will have three regular lanes and one HOV lane in each direction for 25 miles, from I-495 to Route 15.

Other improvements include:

  • Adding a left-turn lane on the westbound I-66 ramp to Rt.15
  • Reconstructing overpasses at Catharpin Rd. and Old Carolina Rd./S. Jefferson St. with 10-foot shared-use paths
  • Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) components for managing traffic volume, improving flow and enhanced incident response
  • Overhead sign structures, utility relocation, storm drainage, storm water management facilities, retaining walls, sound barriers, and roadway lighting on the two overpasses, 12-foot paved shoulders
