Closures include 15-minute total stoppage between Lee Hwy and the Dulles Airport Access Rd

FAIRFAX—Drivers can expect multiple lane closures along westbound I-66 from Lee Highway (East Falls Church) to the Dulles Airport Access Road ramp between 10 p.m. Saturday, June 13 and 5 a.m. Sunday, June 14.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, one lane will be closed as traffic is shifted to the right from North 25th Street to the Dulles Airport Access Road. There will be one full closure between 10 p.m. and midnight Saturday, lasting about 15 minutes.

Motorists are asked to be alert to the new traffic pattern.

The traffic switch is part of a $33 million project to improve westbound I-66 inside the Beltway by connecting the Washington Boulevard on-ramp to the off-ramp at the Dulles Airport Access Road, creating a new one-mile stretch of auxiliary lane. A new 12-foot shoulder will have full-strength pavement capable of carrying traffic during emergencies. The project is expected to be complete in August.

A similar project completed in December 2011 extended the acceleration lane at Fairfax Drive to the deceleration lane at Sycamore Street, creating a continuous lane of almost two miles between the two ramps.

A third project between Lee Highway and Glebe Road is planned but not yet fully funded for construction.
