I-495 Ramps to I-395 Bridge Repairs Underway
Rehabilitation of two bridges scheduled for summer 2018 completion


SPRINGFIELD – Construction is underway on repairs and rehabilitation of two bridges along ramps from I-495 (Capital Beltway) to the northbound I-395 main lanes, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The bridge that carries over the Norfolk Southern Railroad both the ramp from southbound I-495 (Outer Loop) to northbound I-395 and the ramp from northbound I-495 (Inner Loop) to northbound I-395 was built in 1959. The bridge that carries over the Inner Loop the ramp from the Outer Loop to northbound I-395 was built in 1975.

Work on the bridge over the railroad includes: 

  • Replacing the concrete deck
  • Repairing the pre-stressed concrete beams, concrete piers and abutments
  • Paving the approach to the bridge
  • Replacing bearings

Work on the bridge over the Inner Loop includes:

  • Resurfacing the concrete deck
  • Repairing the concrete piers and abutments
  • Repainting steel beams
  • Replacing bearings
  • Removing or replacing joints

At least one lane of the ramps will be open to traffic at all times. Drivers are asked to be cautious when driving through the work zone.

Martins Construction Corporation of Falls Church is the contractor for the project, which is scheduled for completion in summer 2018.
