Nighttime Lane and Ramp Closures on I-66 Saturday Night, 7/28 Through Next Week
Closures needed for work between Prince William Parkway (Route 234) and I-495

FAIRFAX, Va. – Lane and ramp closures, and periodic traffic stoppages, are scheduled to occur during nighttime hours on I-66 east-and westbound between the Prince William Parkway (Route 234 Bypass) and I-495 beginning tomorrow night, Saturday, 7/28, through next week. Details on the planned closures are below. All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement weather occurs.

Drivers traveling on I-66 are urged to use caution, expect delays, and stay informed by registering to receive updates at Transform66.org/Stay Informed.

Lane and Ramp Closure Details:

  • I-66 west between Route 29 Centreville and Bull Run Drive
    • Saturday, July 28 through Friday, August 3 – Three left lanes on I-66 west between Route 29 and Bull Run Drive will close on Saturday, July 28 and Sunday, July 29, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.; Monday, July 30 through Thursday, August 2, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.; and on Friday, August 3, 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. Following this work, all lanes between Route 29 in Centreville and Bull Run Drive will be shifted toward the inside median.
  • Ramp from I-66 east to Prince William Parkway (Route 234 Bypass) south / Exit 44
    • Sunday, July 29 – Full ramp closure from I-66 east to Prince William Parkway (Route 234 bypass) south / Exit 44, Midnight to 3 a.m., for emergency repairs to a crash attenuator. I-66 eastbound traffic will be detoured to southbound Sudley Road (Route 234 Business), and Balls Ford Road back to Prince William Parkway.

  • I-66 east between Route 29 in Centreville and Stringfellow Road
    • Sunday, July 29 and Monday, July 30 – Three left lanes on I-66 east between Route 29 in Centreville and Stringfellow Road will close from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. This work is needed to shift all lanes between Route 29 in Centreville and Stringfellow Road toward the inside median.
  • Route 28
    • Wednesday, August 1 and Thursday, August 2 – Three left lanes on Route 28 north in the vicinity of Route 29 to Walney Road will close from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Following this work, all lanes on northbound Route 28 between I-66 and Walney Road will be shifted.
    • Friday, August 3 – Multiple lanes on Route 28 south in the vicinity of Westfields Boulevard to I-66 will close from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Following this work, all lanes on Route 28 between Braddock Road and I-66 will be shifted.
    • Saturday, August 4 - Monday, August 6 – Ramp narrowing and partial closure from Route 28 north and south to I-66 east from 11:30 p.m. – 4 a.m. Intermittent 15-minute stoppages and slowdowns will occur during overnight hours.
  • Ramp from US Route 50 West to I-66 West 
    • Tuesday, July 31 – Full ramp closure from Route 50 West to I-66 West from Midnight to 4 a.m. Drivers will be detoured on Route 50 to the West Ox Road (Route 608) interchange, where they will exit onto southbound West Ox Road, and then make a right-hand exit onto eastbound Route 50 to westbound I-66.



  • Ramp from I-66 West to Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) North and South
    • Sunday, July 29 – Friday, August 3 - Full ramp closures from I-66 west to northbound and southbound Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) from Midnight to 4 a.m. for crews to set barrier, remove gantries and clear trees within existing VDOT right of way. Traffic will be detoured to the US Route 50 interchange where traffic will exit onto eastbound US Route 50 then make a left-hand exit onto eastbound I-66 back toward Route 123.

  • I-66 East and West between US Route 50 and Blake Lane
    • Sunday, July 29 through Saturday, August 4 – Nightly multiple lane closures and intermittent stoppages on I-66 east and west between US Route 50 and Blake Lane from 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Up to three 15-minute stoppages between midnight and 4 a.m each night so crews can remove overhead sign gantries.  

The work is part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. The I-66 Outside the Beltway Express Lanes are expected to open in December 2022.
