Overnight Closures and Lane Shifts Continue This Week (Week of May 14) on I-66 East Between Route 29 in Gainesville and Sudley Road (234 Business)

FAIRFAX, Va. - Overnight lane closures are scheduled to occur on eastbound I-66 between Catharpin Road (near Route 29 in Gainesville) and Sudley Road (Route 234 Business) in Prince William County beginning tonight and continuing all week. Crews will shift travel lanes and set up work zones for construction on the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway project. 

Details include:

  • Monday, May 14 through Wednesday, May 16: Eastbound I-66 between Route 29 in Gainesville and Sudley Road (Route 234 Business)
  • Three nights of multi-lane closures on eastbound I-66 between the vicinity of Route 29 in Gainesville and Sudley Road (Route 234 Business) starting at 8 p.m. each night, with all lanes re-opened by 5 a.m.
  • Periodic 15-minute stoppages and slowdowns along eastbound I-66 each night
  • Removal of HOV diamonds and left-side yellow edge line between Prince William Parkway (Route 234 Bypass) and Sudley Road (Route 234 Business)
    • Narrowing of the ramp from northbound Prince William Parkway (Route 234 Bypass) to eastbound I-66 is planned for the second night. Drivers should expect slowdowns and periodic 15-minute stoppages on the ramp that night
  • Thursday, May 17: Eastbound I-66 near Route 29 in Gainesville (from the vicinity of Catharpin Road to University Boulevard)
    • Multi-lane closure of eastbound I-66 near Route 29 in Gainesville from the vicinity of Catharpin Road to University Boulevard starting at 8 p.m., with all lanes re-opened by 5 a.m.
    • Periodic 15-minute stoppages and slowdowns along eastbound I-66 throughout the night
    • Removal of HOV diamonds and left side yellow edge line between Route 29 in Gainesville and Prince William Parkway (Route 234 Bypass)

Following this work, all lanes on eastbound I-66 between Prince William Parkway (Route 234 Bypass) and Sudley Road (Route 234 Business) will be shifted toward the inside median.

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement weather occurs.

The work is part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway project. The I-66 Outside the Beltway Express Lanes are expected to open in December 2022.
