Overnight Closures and Lane Shifts This Week on I-66 East in Vicinity of Route 29 in Gainesville and Route 234 Bypass

FAIRFAX, Va. - Overnight lane closures are scheduled for eastbound I-66 between Catharpin Road and Prince William Parkway (Route 234 Bypass) in Prince William County the nights of Monday, June 4 through Thursday, June 7. Crews will shift travel lanes toward the inside median and set up work zones for construction on the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway project. 

Details include:

  • Monday, June 4 and Tuesday, June 5: Eastbound I-66 at Route 29 in Gainesville
    • Three left lanes of eastbound I-66 between the vicinity of Catharpin Road and University Boulevard will close starting at 8 p.m. on Monday, June 4 and starting at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 5. All lanes will re-open by 5 a.m.
    • One lane of the exit ramp from northbound Route 29 to eastbound I-66 will close with occasional 15-minute stoppages on the exit ramp
    • Traffic on the eastbound I-66/Route 29 collector-distributor road will be shifted to the outside shoulder
    • Occasional 15-minute stoppages and slowdowns along eastbound I-66 each night
    • Traffic planning to exit eastbound I-66 at Exit 44 (Prince William Parkway/Route 234 Bypass south) is encouraged to use the eastbound I-66/Route 29 collector-distributor road to access Exit 44 (Route 234 Bypass)
    • On Monday night (June 4), removal of HOV diamonds and left-side yellow edge line in the vicinity of Route 29 in Gainesville

Drivers are advised that once this lane shift is implemented, eastbound I-66 will be reduced to three travel lanes at the Route 29 Gainesville interchange.

  • Wednesday, June 6 and Thursday, June 7: Eastbound I-66 between Route 29 in Gainesville and Prince William Parkway (Route 234 Bypass)
    • Three left lanes of eastbound I-66 between the vicinity of Route 29 in Gainesville and Prince William Parkway (Route 234 Bypass) will close starting at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 6 and Thursday, June 7. All lanes will re-open by 5 a.m.
    • Occasional 15-minute stoppages and slowdowns along eastbound I-66 each night
    • Removal of HOV diamonds and left-side yellow edge line between Route 29 in Gainesville and Prince William Parkway (Route 234 Bypass)

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement weather occurs.

The work is part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway project. The I-66 Outside the Beltway Express Lanes are expected to open in December 2022.
