CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN IN BON AIR BUSINESS DISTRICT
Project will improve drainage, lighting and pedestrian accessibility

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va.—The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin construction on the highly-anticipated Bon Air Improvement Project in Chesterfield County on Wednesday, September 13. This $3 million project, developed with extensive input from the Bon Air Business Association, will improve pedestrian circulation, lighting and drainage in the business community and is expected to be complete by November 2007.

In order to limit traffic impacts during construction, most roads will remain open, with some temporary lane and shoulder closures. To help expedite the project, Choctaw Road near the Bon Air Baptist Church will be limited to one-way traffic from Buford Road to Forest Hill Avenue beginning on or about September 13 through mid-June 2007. Due to this one-way traffic, vehicles will only be able to access Choctaw Road from Buford Road. Travelers from Forest Hill Avenue will be unable to access Choctaw Road during construction.

The following shoulders will be under construction through mid-April 2007 and may involve temporary lane closures:
  • West side of Forest Hill Avenue from the intersection of Huguenot Road to just west of McRae Road
  • East side of McRae Road from Huguenot Road to Forest Hill Avenue
  • East side of Buford Road between Forest Hill Avenue and Choctaw Road
In addition, the east shoulder of Buford Road between Forest Hill Avenue and Huguenot Road will have short term closures with flagging operations.

"This is an important project for the community and will bring noticeable improvements once completed,” said Dale Totten, resident administrator for VDOT’s Chesterfield Residency. "We will do all we can to minimize traffic impacts during construction."

The Bon Air business community is generally defined on the south by Choctaw Road, on the west by Forest Hill Avenue, on the north by Huguenot Road and on the east by Buford Road and Forest Hill Avenue.

For more information about the Bon Air Improvement Project, call VDOT's Chesterfield Residency office at (804) 674-2800 or visit the Bon Air Sidewalk Project Web page.
