COOL SPRING ROAD IN HANOVER CLOSING NEXT WEEK FOR IMPROVEMENTS
Road expected to be closed for 3-4 weeks

HANOVER COUNTY, Va.—As part of the Atlee Station Road widening project, VDOT will be closing Cool Spring Road where it intersects with Atlee Station Road next week in order to make road and railroad crossing improvements. Construction is expected to begin on Nov. 29 and continue for up to four weeks.

During construction, motorists will be restricted from driving over the railroad tracks or accessing Cool Spring Road from Atlee Station Road. CSX will be replacing the rail and crossing equipment at the Cool Spring Road railroad crossing. In addition, VDOT contractor, Blakemore Construction Corporation, will be raising the grade of Cool Spring Road to tie into the new elevation of Atlee Station Road at the intersection.

For motorists wanting to go south on Cool Spring Road to get to Atlee Station Road, the detour will be as follows:
  • Cool Spring Road north to New Ashcake Road east to Route 301 south to Atlee Station Road
  • OR—Cool Spring Road north to New Ashcake Road west to Sliding Hill Road south to Atlee Station Road
For motorists wanting to go north on Cool Spring Road from Atlee Station Road, the detour will be as follows:
  • Atlee Station Road east to Route 301 north to New Ashcake Road west to Cool Spring Road
  • Atlee Station Road west to Sliding Hill Road north to New Ashcake Road east to Cool Spring Road
NOTE: Due to the possibility of construction delays as a result of inclement weather, detour duration is subject to change.

The purpose of the Atlee Station Road widening project is to provide wider travel lanes and shoulders, and improved turn lane access to the adjacent schools and subdivisions. This will allow for smoother traffic flow and less congestion. A traffic signal will be installed at the Cool Spring Road intersection due to the increased volume of motorists entering Atlee Station Road from Cool Spring Road. In addition, the grade along Atlee Station Road prior to Rt. 301 will be reduced in order to provide motorists with better sight distance. VDOT began construction of this $12 million project in May 2006 and anticipate completion in Nov. 2007.
