Public information meeting next week

HENRICO COUNTY, Va.—The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and contractor, English Construction Company, Inc of Lynchburg, will begin a $67 million project to improve the I-295/I-64 interchange in western Henrico County this week, which includes widening Pouncey Tract Road and construction of a new flyover ramp from eastbound I-64 to I-295 south. The project will improve the flow of traffic between I-295 and Route 288, and is scheduled for completion in spring 2009.

The project involves adding a lane to the outside of I-64 in both directions between Route 288 and Route 250 (Broad St. exit 178). The current one-lane ramp from I-295 north to westbound I-64 (towards Charlottesville) will be increased to two lanes. In addition, the current one-lane ramp from westbound I-64 to southbound I-295 will be increased to two lanes. A new, two-lane flyover ramp will carry eastbound I-64 traffic to I-295 south. The ramp will be 1,765 feet long and 35 feet above I-64.

Construction on Pouncey Tract Road will take place between Twin Hickory Lake Drive and the first signal north of Broad Street. The existing two lane bridge over I-64 will be replaced with a new, four-lane bridge. The new bridge will be 338 feet long with a raised median, sidewalks and aluminum railing on each side. In addition, modifications will be made to the first traffic signal north of Broad Street. Widening of Pouncey Tract Road is expected to be complete in spring 2008.

VDOT will hold a public information meeting on Wednesday, April 19 at 6:30 p.m. at Deep Run High School, 4801 Twin Hickory Road in Glen Allen to discuss the upcoming construction and lane closures associated with this project. Area residents, businesses and commuters are encouraged to attend.

Motorists can expect nighttime lane closures starting later this month along Pouncey Tract Road, I-295 and I-64. These nighttime lane closures will be in place for the duration of the project.

In addition, there will be periodic nighttime detours of I-64 traffic onto Broad Street to enable contractors to place structural steel for the new bridges and demolish two existing bridges (Pouncey Tract Road bridge and southbound I-295 bridge over I-64). These detours will take place between 10:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. and will be announced prior to implementation.
