River Road Closed at Railroad Crossing
Detour to begin Monday morning
HOPEWELL, Va.— River Road (Route 645) in Hopewell will be temporarily closed to through traffic from east of Mathis Field park to S. Radford Drive (including access from S. Colonial Drive) beginning 7 a.m., Monday July 24 through Friday, July 28 in order for CSX to make improvements to the railroad crossing. Residents will continue to have access to their property during this time. Motorists traveling into the city are strongly advised to use Oaklawn Boulevard (Route 36) or Randolph Road (Route 10) as an alternate during this time.
For local residents, a road detour through the Pleasant Hills and Shady Oaks subdivisions will be clearly marked with electronic message boards, barricades and detour signs.
The improvement to the railroad crossing is part of the River Road project, started in September 2005, to widen the existing two-lane road between Hopewell’s western limits and Mesa Drive. Improvements include bicycle lanes, curb and gutter, sidewalks, landscaping and dedicated turn lanes for the city park facilities of Crystal Lake/Mathis Field and Atwater Park. The $7.3 million project is scheduled for completion in fall 2007.
See the project web site for more details.
