ROUTE 460 SPEED LIMIT DECREASED IN SECTION OF DINWIDDIE COUNTY TODAY
DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is extending the 55 mph speed limit along Route 460 in Dinwiddie County to include the Sutherland region today. The speed limit will be reduced from 60 mph to 55 mph along the section of Route 460 from just west of the Wal-Mart distribution center to just west of the Claiborne Road/Namozine Road intersection, a distance of about 1 ½ miles.
In July, VDOT increased the speed limit to 60 mph along a 35-mile stretch of Route 460 in Dinwiddie and Nottoway counties, to include this section in Sutherland, based on a previous speed study. The increase to 60 mph in Dinwiddie was supported by the County Board of Supervisors. However, after a request from the local Ruritan Club about the newly increased speed limit in the Sutherland area, VDOT performed a more detailed study of land use. The study revealed some commercial and residential developments that had not been included in the initial study.
“Our more in depth review of the commercial and residential developments, thus increasing the potential for accidents, led to the extension of the 55 mph zone in the Sutherland area,” said Travis Bridewell, regional traffic engineer. “We thank Dinwiddie County civic leaders who were instrumental in bringing this new information to our attention.”
When assessing an area for a possible speed limit increase or decrease, VDOT typically reviews federal criteria, including speed samples, and consults with Virginia State Police to determine the safety impacts of an increased speed limit.
The speed limit along Route 460 will remain 60 mph just west of the Claiborne Road/Namozine Road intersection to just east of the town of Crewe in Nottoway County. The 55 mph speed limit along Route 460 in Dinwiddie County already encompasses the Route 1 intersection, the I-85 interchange and the Wal-Mart distribution center. Virginia State Police will enforce the speed limit change.
