TRANSPORTATION COMMISSIONER APPROVES FIVE CENTRAL VIRGINIA CONTRACTS VALUED AT $3.4 MILLION
COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va.—Virginia Department of Transportation Commissioner Gregory Whirley approved five contracts last Friday valued at $3.4 million for Central Virginia maintenance and construction projects.
L. S. Lee, Inc. of York, Pennsylvania was awarded a $160,000 contract for the installation of guardrail and guardrail terminals on Route 58 and Route 46 in Brunswick County. The installed guardrail systems will conform to the new National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 350 requirements. Lane closures are required to accomplish this work and time restrictions have been imposed to reduce the impact on the traveling public. This project is expected to be complete in May 2006.
The Commissioner awarded Shoosmith Bros, Inc. of Chester, VA a $932,000 contract to improve the riding surface, vertical and horizontal sight distances and improve the drainage system for Tavern Road, an urban collector facility near the Woody’s and Isaac Walton Pond in Prince George County. This project is slated for completion in September 2006.

Key Construction Company, Inc. of Clarksville, Virginia was awarded two contracts:
- One contract for $280,000 to improve the Nutbush Road section of Route 662 in Lunenburg County by straightening the roadway horizontally and vertically in the existing curve area, improve the safety of the traffic flow in both directions, and provide a safer and more efficient surface for travelers. The project involves realignment of the curve, in addition to some minor construction. Work is slated for completion in August 2006.
- The other contract is for $1.4 million to replace the existing Rt. 60 over Norfolk southern bridge superstructure in Chesterfield County with a new three span continuous steel rolled beam superstructure. One westbound lane will be open at all times during construction. The two existing eastbound lanes will remain open during the project. The new curb-to-curb width will carry two lanes of traffic in one direction. This project is begin construction in February 2006 and is scheduled for completion in November 2007.
