VDOT Completes Hanover Project Ahead of Schedule and Under Budget
HANOVER COUNTY, Va. — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) continues to improve its delivery of on-time and on-budget construction and maintenance projects, completing the Route 1 bridge rehabilitation project over Stony Run in Hanover County 10 days ahead of schedule and $73,000 under budget.
Contractor, Corman Construction, Inc., began the $322,000 bridge rehabilitation project last December and completed the work on August 1, 2006. Repair to this 83 year old bridge involved replacing the deck slab overhangs, exterior steel beams, bridge rails, and repairing the reinforced concrete beams and abutments. This structure was widened in 1931 and 1969 and, like all bridges, receives inspections every two years or more frequently as needed. VDOT maintained one lane of traffic in each direction on Route 1 at all times during construction.
“These repairs not only provide for a smoother riding surface, but should extend the life of the bridge for another 15 to 20 years,” said Gary Martin, district structure and bridge engineer.
