FINAL SIX-YEAR PROGRAM APPROVED
Richmond area receives $138 million for road projects in FY 2008

RICHMOND—The Commonwealth Transportation Board yesterday approved an $11 billion statewide funding program for public transportation, rail and highway projects for the next six fiscal years, beginning July 1.

It also approved the first six-year funding program for highway maintenance and operations projects.

The comprehensive package addresses key public transit initiatives, safety and rehabilitation of existing highways and projects to ease bottlenecks.

For the 14-county Richmond District, the plan shows approximately $138 million in funding for interstate, primary, secondary and urban projects in 2008. Some major projects scheduled to begin over the next six years in the Richmond area include:
  • Huguenot Bridge – Replacement of the 58-year old, two-lane bridge with a new structure in the same location that will accommodate a 12-foot travel lane in each direction, a 10-foot shoulder on each side to be used as an emergency lane and bike access, and a five foot sidewalk on each side. A public hearing will be held in the fall and construction is expected to begin in 2010. Approximately $50.5 million was allocated to this project. More information about this project
  • I-95 south ramp to Temple Ave. (Colonial Heights) – A new offramp will be built from I-95 south to Temple Avenue to address safety issues at this intersection. The project is in the early design phase with construction expected in 2010. Approximately $6.1 million was allocated to this project. Construction is currently underway for a new onramp from Temple Avenue to I-95 north. This project will be completed in July 2008.
  • Route 360 and Bell Creek Rd. relocation (Hanover) – This project involves more than four miles of improvements between the I-295 interchange and Walnut Grove Rd. including the relocation of Bell Creek Rd. The project will be built as four separate projects with construction expected to begin in 2010. Approximately $78.2 million was allocated for all four components of this project. An additional $18.6 million will be required after 2013 in order to complete the project for the widening between Lee Davis Rd. and Walnut Grove Rd. More information about this project
