I-64 Bridge Widening and Rehabilitation Project Nearly Complete
Final paving starts next week

HENRICO COUNTY—The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin final paving of the I-64 bridge over the Acca Yard railroad May 29. The bridge widening and rehabilitation project is expected to finish on budget and nearly five months ahead of the original October 15, 2007 completion date.

“This is an incredible accomplishment considering the work was done under heavy vehicle traffic and daily train traffic,” said VDOT Richmond District Administrator Tom Hawthorne. “Both VDOT and the private sector construction partners focused on results which translated to measurable time and cost savings for the traveling public.”

The following paving and pavement marking will take place along I-64 between the Bryan Park interchange (Exits 187-186) and Staples Mill Road (Exit 185) May 29-June 4, weather permitting:
  • 8 p.m. May 29 through 6 a.m. May 30 – At 8 p.m., one lane will be closed on I-64 east. At 10 p.m., two lanes will be closed.
  • May 30 (p.m.) through June 1 (a.m.) – Nightly starting at 8 p.m., one lane will be closed on I-64 west. At 10 p.m. two lanes will be closed. All lanes will be reopened by 6 a.m. each morning.
  • 8 p.m. June 1 through 6 a.m. June 4 – On I-64 west, traffic will be reduced to one lane overnight and two lanes during the daytime hours Saturday and Sunday. Delays could affect I-95 north and south traffic, and I-195 north travel through the Bryan Park interchange.
  • June 2 (a.m.) – VDOT expects to close the Staples Mill Road exit from I-64 west during this time for ramp paving. Timing of this closure will depend on the progress of paving along I-64 west. Motorists are advised to use the posted detour, exiting at Broad Street/Glenside Drive (Exit 183) to access Staples Mill Road.
VDOT contractor, Archer Western Contractors, Ltd., began rehabilitation and widening of the existing I-64 bridge over the Acca railroad switching yard in September 2004. The purpose of the project was to not only rehabilitate the existing 40-year-old structure, but to provide safer entrances and exits at Staples Mill Road and Laburnum Avenue. Additional lengthening of the lanes is expected to minimize congestion at the Bryan Park interchange and provide safer merging for motorists entering I-64 east from Staples Mill Road. The bridge currently carries more than 150,000 vehicles per day with capacity expected to increase by at least 40% by 2025.
To reduce congestion, VDOT maintained three lanes of travel eastbound and four lanes westbound during daytime construction, reserving multiple lane closures for overnight hours.

Before construction, the bridge was three lanes eastbound and four lanes westbound plus the Staples Mill Road exit ramp. Upon completion later this week, the bridge will be five lanes wide eastbound—three existing travel lanes and two ramp lanes (one being a continuous merge lane from Staples Mill Road to the I-195/Laburnum Ave. exit) and six lanes wide westbound—one lane for traffic merging from I-195, three travel lanes and two exit lanes to Staples Mill Road.

Motorists will notice the Staples Mill Road exit from I-64 west has two rather than one dedicated exit ramp. Travelers exiting I-64 west to Rt. 33/Staples Mill Road west (heading toward Glenside Drive or Hanover County) should use the right exit ramp. Travelers to Rt. 33/Staples Mill Road east (heading toward Broad Street) should use the inner exit ramp. In addition, the ramp from westbound Staples Mill Road to I-64 east was widened.
To reduce traffic noise, a 15-20 foot high sound wall was installed on the eastbound side adjacent to the Britton Hills subdivision.

The total cost of the project is $33 million, which includes preliminary engineering, right of way and $23 million for construction.

Following next week’s final paving, VDOT will meet with the contractor to go over any outstanding issues. Once all issues have been resolved, the project will officially be complete.
