I-95 NORTH IN RICHMOND TO BE CLOSED TEMPORARILY TOMORROW NIGHT
Construction to repair portion of bridge beam

RICHMOND — Interstate 95 North will be temporarily closed tomorrow night at mile marker 75 so construction crews can repair a damaged beam under the 5th Street bridge in Richmond.

The overnight interstate closure is necessary to allow workers to safely remove the damaged section, position a new steel beam under the bridge and weld it into place.

This work is a result of a tractor trailer accident that took place in December 2006, when an oversized tractor, carrying a backhoe, hit the bottom of the bridge beam.

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) contractors will begin single lane closures along I-95 North on Tuesday, May 15, at 9 p.m. By 11 p.m., all I-95 North traffic will be detoured around the work zone.

Traffic is expected to be restored by 5 a.m. Wednesday, May 16. In the event of inclement weather on May 15, the work will be postponed to May 16 at the same time.

For safety reasons, motorists will be restricted from traveling along I-95 North during the bridge repair work.Map of Interstate 95 detour

The following clearly marked detour will be in place to direct traffic around the work zone:

  • I-95 north to Exit 75 (Interstate 64 East)

  • I-64 east to Exit 192 (Mechanicsville Turnpike/Route 360 East)

  • Mechanicsville Turnpike to I-64 West onramp

  • I-64 west to Exit 190 (I-95 North) See map.

Based on the previous traffic patterns when similar projects were performed over the last six months, motorists should expect delays of up to 30 minutes.

Virginia State Police and Henrico County Police will assist with traffic management.

As an alternate, motorists traveling on I-95 North through Richmond to locations north of Richmond can take Interstate 295 north (Exit 46) to I-95 North to bypass the construction.

In addition, the right sidewalk will remain closed on the 5th Street Bridge over the interstate throughout the construction. Motorists will continue to have access across the bridge during the repairs.

VDOT encourages motorists to drive safely through this work zone and follow these safety tips:

  • Drive at posted speed limits

  • Obey signs, transition devices and pavement markings

  • Watch for flaggers and follow their directions

  • Look for changes in work zone locations

  • Stay alert

  • Report work zone problems - call VDOT’s Highway Helpline at (800)-367-ROAD.

Virginia motorists can get real-time updates on this work zone and other travel information by calling 511 or visiting 511Virginia.org.
