I-95 South in Ashland to be Closed Temporarily Tuesday Night
Construction to repair portion of bridge beam

ASHLAND, Va.— Interstate 95 south will be temporarily closed Tuesday night at mile marker 92 so construction crews can repair a damaged beam at the Route 54 bridge in Ashland. The overnight interstate closure is necessary to allow workers to safely cut out the damaged section, position a new steel beam under the bridge and weld it into place.

VDOT contractors will begin single lane closures along I-95 south on Tuesday, January 23 at 7 p.m. By 11 p.m., all I-95 south traffic will be detoured around the work zone. Traffic is expected to be restored by 5 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24. In the event of inclement weather on Jan. 23, the work will be postponed to Jan. 24 at the same time..I-95 closure map

For safety reasons, motorists will be restricted from traveling along I-95 south during the bridge repair work. A clearly marked detour will be in place to direct traffic around the work zone. Traffic will be detoured off the highway at the exit 92 off ramp (Rt. 54 – Ashland). Motorists will re-enter the highway at the I-95 south on-ramp from Rt. 54 (see diagram below). I-95 south motorists can expect delays of up to 30 minutes while traveling through this area
As an alternate, motorists traveling on I-95 south to Richmond or locations south of Richmond can take Route 30 west (exit 98), to Route 1 south, then a left on Lewistown Road (Rt. 802) to I-95 south.

In addition, the left lane will remain closed on Route 54 east over the interstate. Motorists will continue to have access across the bridge during the repairs.

VDOT encourages motorists to drive safely through this work zone and follow these safety tips:
  • Drive at posted speed limits
  • Obey signs, transition devices and pavement markings
  • Watch for flaggers and follow their directions
  • Look for changes in work zone locations
  • Stay alert
  • Report work zone problems - call VDOT’s Highway Helpline at 1-800-367-ROAD
Virginia motorists can get updates on I-95 work zones and other travel information by calling 511 or visiting www.511Virginia.org.
