TRANSPORTATION BOARD APPROVES A CENTRAL VIRGINIA CONTRACT VALUED AT $3.1 MILLION
Virginia Capital Trail Project
RICHMOND—The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) approved a contract valued at approximately $3.1 million for central Virginia construction and maintenance.
Howard Brothers Contractor, Inc. of Providence Forge, Virginia was awarded a contract to construct a stand alone shared-use path for pedestrians, bicycles and other non-motorized vehicles. In addition, the contract will maintain the driveway and cross street connections with the trail construction on the south side of Route 5 in Charles City County. The project begins at Route 658, Kimages Road, and ends west of Route 643 at Charles City Courthouse. The total length of the project is approximately seven miles. Completion is anticipated in July 2009.
The Virginia Capital Trail will be a unique feature along Route 5, serving bicyclists and pedestrians with a 8 to 10 foot wide, paved shared-use path. The trail will run between Williamsburg and Richmond, crossing portions of James City, Charles City and Henrico counties. The Charles City County Courthouse phase will provide separation between motorized and non-motorized traffic and increased safety for all users within the Route 5 corridor.
