TRANSPORTATION BOARD APPROVES TWO CENTRAL VIRGINIA CONTRACTS VALUED AT $6.7 MILLION
I-295 repaving and regional traffic signal installation
RICHMOND—The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) approved two contracts today valued at approximately $6.7 million for central Virginia construction and maintenance.
Interstate Construction Corporation of Rockville, Virginia was awarded a $4.2 million contract to make improvements to a section in critical need of repair along Interstate 295 north in Henrico County to include concrete repair, pavement overlay, guardrail upgrades and pavement marker installation. These improvements will increase safety along the I-295 corridor and provide for smoother travel.
The I-295 north improvements will start near the Chickahominy River (Henrico/Hanover County line) in north Henrico County and proceed to the Greenwood Road/Woodman Road bridge. The project includes pavement repairs to the lanes along the I-295 north collector-distributor road, I-95 south interchange and Route 1 north and south interchange.
The pavement overlay process will involve the use of stone matrix asphalt, a high-quality material that can only be applied during warm temperatures. This material combined with concrete repair prior to the overlay will extend the life of the highway.
Built in the early 1980’s through 1991, I-295 is a major transportation artery in the Richmond area. The northern section of the I-295 between Pole Green Road in Hanover County and Staples Mill Road in Henrico County carries from 30,000 to 50,000 cars per day. To reduce inconvenience to motorists, the majority of the lane closures for this project will be done during overnight hours. Work will begin in mid-June and is expected to be complete by November 2007.
A similar project is underway along I-295 north that includes two sections on either side of this project—between Meadowbridge Road/Pole Green Road and the Chickahominy River in Hanover County and between Greenwood Road/Woodman Road and Mountain Road/Staples Mill Road in Henrico County. These two sections are expected to be completed in August 2008. More than 11 miles of I-295 north will receive pavement repairs and roadway improvements with these two projects.

The Richardson-Wayland Electrical Company, LLC of Roanoke, Virginia was awarded a $2.5 million contract to provide rapid signal installation services to central Virginia through 2008.
