TRANSPORTATION COMMISSIONER APPROVES NINE CENTRAL VIRGINIA CONTRACTS VALUED AT $5 MILLION

RICHMOND—Virginia Department of Transportation Commissioner David Ekern approved nine contracts last week valued at approximately $5 million for central Virginia construction and maintenance.

Curtis Contracting, Inc. of West Point, Virginia was awarded a $98,000 contract to remove and replace sound wall panels that were damaged by vehicular impact, and repair two sound wall post and concrete foundations on I-295 north and south in Prince George County. The following locations will receive replacement sound wall panels:
  • I-295 south at mile marker 9
  • I-295 north at mile marker 11
  • I-295 north at mile marker 12
  • I-295 north at mile marker 13 – this location will receive foundation repair, steel sound wall post repairs and sound wall replacement.
The contractor will fabricate new sound wall panels to match those in existence and replace the damaged sound wall panels with the newly fabricated panels. This project is expected to be complete in June 2007.

Lanford Brothers Company, Inc. of Roanoke, Virginia was awarded two contracts. One contract is for $381,000 to perform miscellaneous steel repairs and reconstruct deck joints on the I-95/I-64 bridge over Lombardy Street and the CSX railroad in the city of Richmond. This bridge was originally constructed in 1958 and has undergone various repairs, most recently in 1985. Anticipated completion date for this project is June 2007.

The other contract for $398,000 involves rehabilitation to the Route 36 (Chesterfield Avenue) bridge over the Appomattox River in Chesterfield County at the southern entrance to Virginia State University. The 46 year old bridge carries an average of 7,300 vehicles per day. Prolonged exposure to de-icing chemicals has deteriorated the concrete deck to the extent that the top half is in need of replacement. Other areas of the bridge are also in need of rehabilitation. Repairs are expected to add 20 years to the life of the structure. All work will be performed in two stages and traffic will be regulated to one lane by means of a temporary traffic signal. In addition, pedestrian access across the bridge will be maintained. This project is expected to be complete in August 2007.

Payne Paving Company, Inc. of Scottsville, Virginia was awarded three contracts totaling $2 million for asphalt surface treatments in various locations throughout the Richmond area.

Whitehurst Paving Company, Inc. of Richmond, Virginia was awarded a contract valued at $431,000 for asphalt surface treatments in various locations throughout the Richmond area.

Slurry Pavers, Inc. of Glen Allen, Virginia was awarded two contracts, one valued at $1 million for slurry seal in various locations throughout Richmond. The other contract was valued at $783,000 for latex modified emulsion and pavement markings at various locations throughout Richmond.
