TRANSPORTATION COMMISSIONER APPROVES SIX CENTRAL VIRGINIA CONTRACTS VALUED AT $5.2 MILLION

RICHMOND— Virginia Department of Transportation Commissioner David Ekern approved six contracts this week valued at approximately $5.2 million for central Virginia construction and maintenance.

Colony Construction, Inc. of Powhatan, Virginia was awarded two contracts totaling approximately $2.3 million. The first was a $450,000 contract which combines two former construction projects with the overlay pavement maintenance schedules for Powhatan, Chesterfield and Amelia counties and the overlay pavement maintenance schedules for Lunenburg and Nottoway counties.

This project is located on Duke Road (Route 715) from Swann Road (Route 725) to Cartersville Road (Route 684) and on Swann Road (Route 725) from the end of state maintenance to Duke Road (Route 715) in Powhatan County. The project involves paving the unpaved portion of Duke Road and Swann Road, grading, constructing the aggregate base, repairing/replacing damaged cross pipes, and cleaning out ditches. Crews will also overlay asphalt to various secondary routes in Chesterfield, Powhatan and Amelia counties. This will improve the rideability of the road and extend the life of the pavement. The expected completion date is Nov. 2007.

The second was a $1.8 million contract to overlay asphalt to various secondary routes in Nottoway and Lunenburg counties. This will improve the rideability of the road and extend the life of the pavement. This project is expected to be complete by Nov. 2007.

Corman Construction, Inc. of Annapolis Junction, Maryland was awarded a $1.5 million contract to rehabilitate the 49-year-old Sycamore Street (Rt. 301) bridge over I-85 in Petersburg to include bridge deck and beam replacement, and repair to deteriorated areas. A temporary signal will be in place along Sycamore Street to allow for alternating one way traffic during construction. During the I-85 lane closures, one lane of travel will be maintained in each direction. The project will begin in late August and is expected to be complete by Oct. 2008. VDOT will hold a public information meeting next month to discuss the upcoming construction, lane closures and answer project-related questions. More information about the project.

Lee Hy Paving Corp. of Glen Allen, Virginia was awarded two contracts totaling approximately $962,000. The first was a $356,000 contract to add three foot wide asphalt shoulders on Route 106 north and south in Charles City County. The shoulder improvements will begin at the north end of the Benjamin Harrison Memorial Bridge and continue north to the Route 650 intersection—approximately six miles. Improvements are expected to be complete by Nov. 2007.

The second was a $606,000 contract to overlay existing pavements on various secondary routes in Hanover and Goochland counties to provide a smoother riding surface. Total length of paving is 4.47 miles in Hanover and 2.34 miles in Goochland. The project also involves improvement of shoulders and the installation of new pavement markers. Expected completion is Nov. 2007.
