TRANSPORTATION COMMISSIONER APPROVES THREE CENTRAL VIRGINIA CONTRACTS VALUED AT $2.3 MILLION

RICHMOND— Virginia Department of Transportation Commissioner David Ekern approved three contracts last week valued at approximately $2.3 million for central Virginia construction and maintenance.

B.P. Short & Son Paving Co., Inc. of Petersburg, Virginia was awarded a contract for $1.3 million for I-85 pavement maintenance in Dinwiddie County. The project involves milling and paving the current asphalt pavement and improving the guardrails to meet Federal Highway Administration standards. At least one lane of travel will remain open at all times. The safety project is expected to be complete by June 2008.

Wunna Contracting Corporation of Centreville, Virginia was awarded a $546,000 contract to make repairs to the I-295 bridge over Beaverdam Creek in Hanover County. The bridge was originally constructed in 1979 and has had miscellaneous repairs in the past. Although the bridge is structurally sound and can accommodate normal traffic, recent maintenance inspections have found signs of wear including cracks and corrosion. To extend the life of the bridge, the contractor will perform miscellaneous steel repairs, retrofit fatigue prone areas, reseal open deck joints, and coat the beams and bearings.

Lane closures on I-295 will be restricted to non-peak hours (after 9:30 p.m. and before 5:30 a.m.) during this repair work. Estimated completion is May 2008. For more information about VDOT’s Bridge Safety Program visit www.virginiadot.org/info/bridge.asp.

W-L Construction & Paving, Inc. of Chilhowie, Virginia was awarded a $462,000 contract to mill and pave, and make guardrail upgrades to 3.4 miles of Rt. 49 from the Halifax County line to Rt. 604. Estimated completion is May 2008.
