I-95 NORTH TO BE CLOSED TEMPORARILY TONIGHT
Construction to repair portion of bridge beam

PRINCE GEORGE— Interstate 95 north will be temporarily closed tonight at Rt. 301 (Exit 45) in Prince George to allow construction crews to repair a damaged beam under the Rt. 301 bridge. The overnight interstate closure is necessary to allow workers to safely remove the damaged section, position a new steel beam under the bridge and weld it into place. This work is the result of a March 2008 incident when the bridge was struck by an over height load.

VDOT contractors will begin single lane closures along I-95 north tonight at 9 p.m. By 10 p.m., all I-95 north traffic will be detoured around the work zone. Traffic is expected to be restored by 5:30 a.m. tomorrow morning.

For safety reasons, motorists will be restricted from traveling along I-95 north during the bridge repair work. A clearly marked detour will be in place to direct traffic around the work zone. Traffic will be detoured off the highway at Exit 45 (Rt. 301). Motorists will re-enter the highway at the I-95 north on-ramp from Rt. 301 (see diagram below). I-95 north motorists can expect delays of up to 30 minutes when traveling through this area.

Rt. 301 through traffic will continue to have access over the bridge during the repairs and detour.

VDOT encourages motorists to drive safely through this work zone and follow these safety tips:

  • Drive at posted speed limits
  • Obey signs, transition devices and pavement markings
  • Watch for flaggers and follow their directions
  • Look for changes in work zone locations
  • Stay alert
  • Report work zone problems - call VDOT’s Highway Helpline at 1-800-367-ROAD

Virginia motorists can get updates on I-95 work zones and other travel information by calling 511 or visiting www.511Virginia.org.
