THREE OVERSIZED LOADS TO TRAVEL THROUGH VIRGINIA THIS MONTH
Expect overnight delays between Newport News and Martinsville

COLONIAL HEIGHTS – An oversized tractor trailer carrying forging press equipment is scheduled to make three trips between Newport News and Martinsville (approximately 300 miles in each direction) starting Monday. The operators will travel along the designated routes between 6:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. and, if necessary, move to pre-determined stops along the route. Each trip is expected to take two to three days depending on weather and other unexpected conditions. Motorists traveling near the transport may experience delays.

The trips will take place on the following dates:

  • Monday, July 13 through Wednesday, July 15
  • Tuesday, July 14 through Thursday, July 16
  • Tuesday, July 21 through Thursday, July 23

Miller Transfer will transport three parts of a forging press (used to make titanium) from the Newport News Marine Terminal to RTI International Metals in Martinsville using a truck that is approximately 225 feet long (the length of three and a half normal tractor trailers), 16 feet 5 inches wide and has a combined gross weight of up to 551,000 pounds. Information about the transport operation will be posted on Virginia’s 511 travel information system, which is available by dialing 511 on any telephone in Virginia and on the 511 Web site www.511Virginia.org.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has coordinated with Miller Transfer to develop a route that will minimize the impact to drivers, local businesses and residents. VDOT will place variable message signs along the route to advise drivers of potential traffic delays. VDOT maintenance vehicles and state and local law enforcement will accompany the transport vehicle to provide traffic control.

After leaving the Newport News Marine Terminal, the trailer will travel through: Map of Trailer Route
