I-95 NORTHBOUND BRIDGE REPLACEMENT AT OVERBROOK ROAD THIS WEEKEND
Expect major delays in Richmond Friday night through Sunday night

COLONIAL HEIGHTS — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is gearing up for the second and final weekend to replace the complex I-95 bridge at Overbrook Road as part of the I-95 Richmond Bridge Restorations project. The southbound bridge was successfully replaced the weekend of March 1 and crews will replace the northbound side starting Friday night. Drivers should expect major delays along I-95 through Richmond, on I-64 east at the Bryan Park interchange (mile marker 187) and on I-64 west at the Shockoe Valley Bridge (mile marker 190) through Sunday night. VDOT is strongly encouraging through travelers to use I-295 to bypass the construction.

The northbound Overbrook Road bridge will be replaced from 8 p.m. Friday, March 15 through 6 a.m. Monday, March 18. During construction, I-95 will be reduced to one travel lane in each direction between Belvidere Street (mile marker 76) and Boulevard (mile marker 78). In addition, traffic on Robin Hood Road under I-95 will be reduced to one lane in each direction.

From 7 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Monday, the following will be closed. Detour routes will be posted.

  • The ramp from Robin Hood Road to I-95 south
  • Overbrook Road under I-95

VDOT strongly encourages weekend travelers on I-95 and I-64 through Richmond use one of the following alternate routes to bypass the construction.

From I-95 southbound (Henrico): Access I-295 at exit 84 to reach I-64 east/west or areas south of Richmond; through travelers can use I-295 south to bypass Richmond and re-enter I-95 south at exit 46 in Prince George County. Local traffic can also take exit 82 (Chamberlayne Avenue/Route 1/301 south) to reach Richmond destinations.

From I-95 northbound (Prince George): Access I-295 at exit 46 to reach I-64 east/west or areas north of Richmond; through travelers can use I-295 north to bypass Richmond and re-enter I-95 north at exit 84 in Henrico County.

From I-64 eastbound (Goochland/Henrico): There are three alternate routes:

  • Access Route 288 south at exit 175 in Goochland to reach Chesterfield County locations and to re-enter I-95 at exit 62
  • Access I-295 at exit 177 to reach I-95 north or I-64 east of Richmond
  • Access I-195 south at exit 186 in Richmond to reach downtown destinations, Route 76/Powhite Parkway Extension (toll) through Chesterfield County or the Downtown Expressway (toll).

From I-64 westbound (Henrico/New Kent): Access I-295 north at exit 200 to reach I-95 or to continue on to I-64 west of Richmond.

Due to the height of power lines over the Overbrook Road bridge, the cranes used to replace the bridge sections will need to be dis-assembled, moved into place between the power lines, and then re-assembled. Crews will remove and install bridge units over the weekend, then dis-assemble the cranes early Monday and move the equipment out of the work zone in time for the morning commute.

The $106 million I-95 Richmond Bridge Restorations project is currently on time and on budget. The bridge replacements are anticipated to be completed in June 2014.
